The throttle body on a diesel does not do the same job as on a petrol engine. Most of the time it can be wide open, the engine runs lean. Only the fuel needs to be controlled. My 1.8 has no throttle valve at all. The white smoke will be unburnt diesel which could be down to faulty glow plugs but if it wasn't doing this before I'd be more likely to suspect that some part of the fuel system has a tiny leak and is allowing a small amount of air in.
